TT, Siliguri, June 29: Tourism minister Gautam Deb is likely to be the new president of Darjeeling district Trinamul, sources in the party said.
This evening, the sources said, Trinamul chief Mamata Banerjee had held talks with minister Arup Biswas and some other leaders at Uttarkanya on the matter.
"It seems the state leadership will eventually choose Gautam Deb as the new Darjeeling district Trinamul president. The Trinamul leaders are likely to bank on him as he was in charge of the party in the district for several years," a Trinamul insider said.
Deb had been the Darjeeling district president of Trinamul for over 11 years since July 2004. He was replaced by Ranjan Sarkar in November last year following back-to-back defeats of Trinamul in Siliguri municipal and mahakuma parishad polls.
However, Sarkar failed to live up to the expectations of the state leadership and consolidate Trinamul's support base ahead of the Assembly polls.
Both Deb and Sarkar refused comment.
