PR, KalimNews, Hyderabad, June 21: Sabina Inderjit, Vice-President of Indian Journalists Union (IJU) is elected Vice-President of International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), representing six lakh journalists in 160 countries, at its 39th Congress held at Angers, France recently for years 2016-19.
She is the first journalist from Asia to occupy that important position. She was the member of IFJ Executive Committee for the last five terms from 2001 to 2016.
The Congress elected Philippe Leruth (Belgium) as President, Younes M'Jahed of (Morocco) as Senior Vice-President, Sabina Inderjit (India) Joachim Krebich (Germany) as Vice-Presidents and Jim Boumelha (England) as Honorary Treasurer for a three year term.
Sabina Inderjit, daughter of Veteran editor journalist and former member of Lok Sabha Inderjit Khuller, is now heading the India News and Feature Alliance (INFA) as Chief of Bureau, one of the oldest news and features agencies in the country, founded by her grandfather Durga Das and nurtured by her late father.
She is a prominent leader of the Indian Journalists Union (IJU), the premier and most representative organisation of the working journalists in the country for the last two decades.
She served the organisation as National Executive Committee (NEC) Member, Treasurer and Vice President.
She is the champion of gender equality and justice among the journalists in the country and abroad.
In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the Indian Journalists Union (IJU) President S N Sinha and Secretary-General Amar Devulapalli congratulated Sabina Inderjit on her election as Vice-president of International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).
“The election of Sabina to the position of Vice-president of IFJ testifies to the prestige the Indian Journalists Union (IJU) enjoys among the comity of journalists organisations in the world. We feel proud that our representative is the first Asian to occupy that august position".
“This honour increases our responsibility and we vow to stand up to the trust reposed in our organisation by strengthening our activities in the cause of freedom of expression, welfare and protection of journalists not only in our country but also globally,” the IJU statement said.
A.K.Rai Secretary of Eastern Himalayan Journalists Union, an affiliate of IJU has congratulated Sabina.
Sabina Vice President of IJU previously also served as Treasurer of IJU and was an executive member of IFJ since 2001.
Sabina has a diploma in journalism from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication and thereafter trained with the Times of India group.
She has worked as a Sr Sub-Editor, Principal Correspondent and a Special Correspondent with Times of India, Delhi office.
She served as a Member of the Press Council of India for two terms (1998-2004) and is a dynamic activist viz promoting freedom of the press and journalists’ rights.
She is on the board of various journalist organizations including the Indian Journalists’ Union, India, and Brussels-based International Federation of Journalists.
