Parishad U-turn
TT, Alipurduar, April 5: The Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad today said it will not support Wilson Champramary and Padam Lama, the Trinamul candidates for Kalchini and Madarihat in Alipurduar district.
The decision contradicts Parishad's earlier decision to support Trinamul candidates in all seats in north Bengal. The Parishad is the largest apolitical organisation of tribals in the region with a substantial hold over tribal voters in the Dooars and Terai.
"We have decided that we will support Atul Suba, an Independent candidate, and not the Trinamul candidate in Kalchini seat. Also, we will not support the Trinamul candidate in the Madarihat seat but are yet to decide whom we will support there. We do not approve of Trinamul's decision of selecting these people as candidates," Rajesh Barla, the president of Kalchini block committee of Parishad, said today. "Both have murky backgrounds and supporting them would send a wrong message to tribals here. Wilson is the departing MLA. In all these years, he never raised his voice on the plight of tea workers," he added.
