Alliance sown in Siliguri: Yechuri

TT, Siliguri, April 6: CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechuri today said people of Siliguri had shown the way to stitch an alliance between the Left Front and the Congress across the state.
“People of Siliguri have played a leading role in forming the alliance. They have initiated the concept of (the Left Front and the Congress) joining hands to oust Trinamul from power and have shown the way to the people of the state. We are aware of the elections to the Siliguri Municipal Corporation and Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad where the people’s alliance worked. Gradually, the message has been disseminated across the state and now, such an alliance is across the state. Now, the message is spreading fast across the country,” the CPM general secretary said at a public meeting held off Sevoke Road here.
The meeting was held in support of Dilip Singh, the Left candidate for Dabgram-Fulbari Assembly seat.
Yechuri, who kicked off his campaign for the Assembly polls in Bengal at Malbazar in Jalpaiguri district today, also spoke at another meeting in Tikiapara, Siliguri.
“We are often asked whether we have initiated the alliance. We reply that leaders of some political parties have not sat together to forge the alliance. It was done by the people, right from the grassroots,” Yechuri said.
According to him, people are standing beside each other to save their self-respect.
“Bengal used to guide the nation. But in the past five years, its glory has been lost. It is time to restore the glory and save the state. The contribution of Bengal to the field of creativity is well known. It is necessary to initiate a new renaissance in the state and that is possible only if Trinamul is defeated,” Yechuri said.
