Night-vision cameras for trains

TT, Alipurduar, 2 February 2016: rains that run between Siliguri and Alipurduar will be fitted with night-vision cameras on an experimental basis to see if collisions with elephants can be avoided in forested stretches.
Harjit Kumar Jaggi, the general manager of Northeast Frontier Railway, while on a visit to Falakata station, said the railways had got in touch with the Defence Research and Development Organisation that makes night-vision cameras.
Several stretches of the 163km track between Alipurduar and Siliguri are forests from where elephants emerge to cross tracks at night. Although, trains have been told to slow down in these stretches, several elephant deaths are reported every year. The railway also plans to make underpasses and overpasses to stop the train-animal collision
