Veteran Cong leader KB Chhetri passes away

EOI, Darjeeling 8 Nov 2015 KB Chhetri, veteran Congress leader of the Darjeeling hills and former Member of Parliament, today breathed his last around 1:30pm at his residence in Dilaram. He was 82.
Survived by his wife BK Thakuri (former principal, St Xavier’s Higher Secondary School), three sons and their respective families and an extended family, Chhetri leaves behind a legacy in hill politics and a vacuum that will be very difficult to fill. He had not been keeping in the best of health since the past fortnight or so and had been undergoing treatment at the Neotia GetWel hospital in Siliguri.
Never one to steer clear of social duties and work, Chhetri was actively serving as the secretary of the Dilaram-based St Xavier’s Higher Secondary School. Besides, he has remained the founder member of Panchawati Higher Secondary School, Shelpu and Sai Sundaram Higher Secondary School.
Chhetri was appointed as MP to the Rajya Sabha from 1972-1977, while he became legislator in the Lok Sabha from 1977-1980. The selfless service Chhetri has given to society will remain etched forever in the hearts of the people of Darjeeling. The Dilaram Nari Kalyan Samiti has informed the funeral rites will be held on Monday, November 9 in Dilaram from 2:00pm onwards.
