Tea prod to govt
TT, Siliguri, Aug. 31: Harsh Mandar, the special commissioner appointed by Supreme Court to look into starvation in the country, will ask the Bengal government to provide relief to the workers and families of tea gardens run by the Duncan Goenka Group.
Anuradha Talwar, the advisor to the special commissioner in Bengal, today said: "The special commissioner had visited the tea estates of the Duncan Goenka Group and gone through a survey report based on the findings of a team which went to these plantations. So, the special commissioner has decided to write a letter to the state government with all relevant details and ask for immediate relief measures to help the workers and their families."
According to Talwar, there are 74,190 people living on the 16 tea estates of the Duncan group. She said so many people were starving in the gardens and yet, the state had not taken any step against the management and extended help to the workers. Wages and rations have been irregular for months in the gardens
