College staffer who was assaulted dies

PRASHANT ACHARYA, EOI, Siliguri, 4 Sep 2015: Debraj Bhowmik, the staff member of Gyanjyoti College who was assaulted on September 1 for allegedly molesting a student in the campus premises, succumbed to his injuries this morning in a private nursing home where he had been kept in a ventilator. He had sustained severe injuries on his head, face and upper torso after being attacked by a mob.
Bhowmik’s body was handed over to his family after a post mortem at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital. The deceased’s wife, Pinky, alleged her husband has been murdered and that she filed another complaint today at the Matigara police station demanding the arrest of the student, her uncle and 50 others.
A case has been filed under Section 304 of the IPC, informed police sources, adding no one has been arrested so far in connection with the case. A distraught Pinky asked, "If my husband had committed a crime, why didn't she (student) lodge a police complaint and inform the college authority? Despite the teacher-in-charge asking her and her uncle to sit for talks to resolve the issue, they ignored the request and incited outsiders to assault my husband instead. This was done on intention. I want justice and the immediate arrest of the culprits."
Bhowmik, a resident of Deshabandhu Para in Siliguri, has left behind his wife and a young child. The situation around the college area is quite tense and the authorities have decided to shut down Gyanjyoti College for an indefinite period.
