KLO arrest claim

TT, Jalpaiguri, Aug. 2: A suspected KLO militant was arrested from Banarhat last night while he was allegedly trying to extort money from an unknown person.

Binod Roy, a resident of Jamrijhora village in Falakata, Alipurduar district, was produced in the judicial magistrate 1 court here today.

The court remanded him in police custody for five days. Akash Magharia, the superintendent of police of Jalpaiguri, said: “We have arrested a suspected KLO militant after receiving a tip-off. We have sought his custody.” According to police sources, Binod, 30, has several cases registered against him.

“He has important information about the training camps of KLO. He was also involved in the threatening of a businessman at Husludanga under Mainaguri police station in 2013 for money. Yesterday, we came to know that he would visit Banarhat to collect money from some person. We suspect he was on an extortion mission for the KLO. Nagrakata police arrested him,” a senior police officer said here today.

Banarhat is 30km from here. Binod, while being brought to the court, said he had no link with the KLO.

“I am not associated with the KLO. I am a carpenter and had been to Banarhat to collect money from a person at the instruction of one of my friends. I don’t know why I was arrested,” he said.
