More rain soon, monsoon blowing in fine: Met dept Read
According to an officer of the department, the monsoon had already covered Midnapore, North 24-Parganas, South 24-Parganas, Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly and Nadia. There would be more rain in the next couple of days as there was enough moisture entering the state, he said.
Earlier, Met department could not explain why the monsoon got delayed despite favourable conditions and said that either a cyclonic circulation or a low pressure trough could give the necessary "push" to the monsoon in the districts of south Bengal. However, the monsoon arrived on time in north Bengal. Initially, the Central Met department predicted that there could be less rain this year due to the effects of El Nino (or the warming of ocean waters). For the past two days the city received rainfall of 9.1 mm and 2.3 mm respectively.
Weather experts said that so far rainfall was not bad as compared to last year.
Even Assam received more rainfall than the previous year in the same period, and the time had not come to declare that there would be reduced rainfall due to the effects of El Nino, said an expert. The past two days' rainfall has caused water-logging in several places in the city, including Jadavpur, Amherst Street and Metiabruz.
