Modi cheer for Northeast

TT, Guwahati, Nov. 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will herald good news for the Northeast during his three-day visit to the region from Saturday, the BJP indicated today.
The indication came at a news conference addressed by Assam BJP’s recently appointed president Siddhartha Bhattacharya here this morning on the BJP workers’ rally to be addressed by Modi at Sarusajai stadium on Sunday between noon and 1.15pm.
“Modiji had made promises to the people of Assam and the Northeast during campaigning for the Lok Sabha polls. Progress has been made on some fronts since he took over as the Prime Minister. You can expect some more good news during his visit. Modiji is quite familiar with the problems of the state, having worked here as a pracharak. You will get to hear for yourself what he will do for the region during his visit,” Bhattacharya said.
The state BJP, he said, was finalising a memorandum on the state’s problems to be submitted to Modi during his first visit to the region after becoming the Prime Minister.
Modi had campaigned extensively in the Northeast, particularly Assam.
The Northeast has 24 Lok Sabha seats, of which BJP won eight — seven in Assam and one in Arunachal Pradesh.
The BJP workers rally has been organised to “thank” the grassroots-level workers for making the party a strong force in the state where the Congress is well entrenched.
Over 50,000 people are expected to attend the rally and 25 sub-committees have been formed to ensure its smooth conduct, Bhattacharya said.
“The good thing is that everybody has extended cooperation — from the police to the administration to the people in the organisation. All are very eager to help ensure a smooth rally,” he said.
Modi will also inaugurate the DGP-IGP conference, which is being held outside Delhi for the first time.
Dispur will also submit a memorandum to Modi. Assam chief secretary Jitesh Khosla chaired a meeting this evening to finalise it.
Bhattacharya later told The Telegraph that there has been significant movement on issues involving Assam and the Northeast, specifically related to development of infrastructure.
The PMO, sources said, had yesterday informed Dispur that Modi would flag off the first train from Mendipathar in North Garo Hills of Meghalaya to Dudhnoi in Goalpara district of Assam by remote-controlled device.
He would also unveil a plaque for a new rail line from Bhairabi to Sairang in Mizoram on Saturday from Maligaon Railway Stadium in Guwahati.
Modi will leave for Imphal from Guwahati on Sunday afternoon. The final itinerary of his visit could see some changes, sources said.
