Car rally

TT, Siliguri, Nov. 21: Around 60 women will drive through unknown terrains in the foothills of the Himalayas on Sunday for the winner’s trophy at the “Queen on Wheels,” an all woman car rally, which will be organised by Rotary Club of Siliguri Green in association with The Telegraph.
Sandeep Agarwal, the media in-charge of the club, today said while all the drivers would be women, over 40 cars will have female navigators or would be all-women teams.
“Car racing is a male-dominated field. But we wanted to promote adventure sports among women and provide them with an opportunity to prove their mettle,” Agarwal said.
“Also, all these women, who include housewives, working ladies and youngsters, will drive for a cause as the proceeds of the event will go into the Happy Schools project run by Rotary,” he said. Under the Happy Schools project, the Rotary Club provides funds and assistance to schools to improve basic amenities for children.
“Being the first-of-its-kind event to be held in Siliguri, we have received a phenomenal response and are expecting around 60 teams at the rally. All these teams would have women drivers and around 40 of these would also have female navigators, thus making these all-women teams. It would be flagged off from Phansidewa More on the outskirts of Siliguri and will end at Uttarayon. The total distance that the participants will cover is 25km to 30km,” Agarwal said.
The event, the Rotary representative said, would be organised in TSD or Time-Speed-Distance format and would be managed by Just Sportz, a Calcutta-based event management company.
