Bengal terror suspected as two held with arms, ammo in Assam
SNS, Siliguri, 9 November 2014: The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) today said it is suspecting that a huge cache of arms and ammunition seized at Chapaguri under the Dhaligaon police station in Assam could have been used for subversive activities in West Bengal. Two persons, including a resident of Darjeeling, were arrested in Assam yesterday.
SSB director general BD Sharma, who attended a programme of the SSB’s Wives Welfare Association of Frontier Headquarters-Siliguri on cleft lips and cleft palate here today, said they suspect that there could have been plans for subversive activities in Bengal. “The vehicle in which the duo was travelling with the arms and the ammunition had a West Bengal registration number. It seems that the vehicle was headed for north Bengal. I have spoken to the West Bengal director general of police, GMP Reddy, and a police team has been sent there for further investigations,” Mr Sharma said on the sidelines of the programme. According to him, the Assam police, the Central Reserve Police Force and the 15th battalion of SSB made the seizure and the arrest.
According to Assam police sources, an M-16 rifle, three .32 bore pistols, two Baretta pistols, 300 ammunition of 9 mm pistol, some cartridges of AK series rifles and a huge number of cartridges of M-16 rifles and .32 pistol were seized from the duo.
Inspector general of police of Kokrajhar district LR Bishnoi said the Assam police also suspects that there could have been plans for subversive activities in Bengal. “We suspect plans for subversive activities and the consignment was supposed to be delivered in Darjeeling. One of the arrested persons, Umesh Kami, hails from Darjeeling, and another person is from Baksa district of Assam.
“They had collected the arms and ammunition from the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) in Nagaland. We are trying to ascertain which faction of the outfit was involved in it,” Mr Bishnoi said over telephone from Assam.
“We are investigating and trying to know their modus operandi. A team of Bengal police has reached here for interrogation of the duo. The entire facts will come out after the thorough investigation,” he added.
