Sikkim CM hits out at rival brother

SNS, Gangtok, 8 September: The battle between two brothers has reached fever pitch as the Yangang-Rangang by-election in South Sikkim approaches.
Campaigning for Kumari Thapa, the candidate fielded by the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), at Sangmo today, chief minister Pawan Chamling came down heavily on his brother, RN Chamling, who is contesting the September 13 polls as an Independent candidate.
“Why are the people of this constituency supporting RN? This is surprising. The election held four months back was for forming a new government, and that is why a few people were behind another party with hopes of forming a government, but I wonder why the people are supporting him when the people have already given their verdict and the SDF has already formed the government,” he said.
“It does not matter if we win or lose in the by-polls. Even if our candidate loses, it will be our victory and defeat of the constituency, as it will face a drought and the public will face the consequences,” he added. Today’s meeting was attended by SDF candidate Kumari Thapa, MP PD Rai, Speaker KN Rai and other ministers.
Accusing his brother of misusing his blood ties, Mr Chamling said, “To misuse a family relationship and to misguide the public is also a form of corruption.”He further claimed that he has no political relations with his brother, and added that the door of his official residence will always be shut for his brother. “All goons and hooligans are supporting RN Chamling and they have started throwing stones, and I know how to deal with them after the elections.”
