Torrential rainfall claims life in Sittong
EOI, Kurseong, 30 June 2014: The first casualty of this year’s monsoon from the Darjeeling hills was reported Sunday from Sittong in Kurseong sub-division. A farmer named Prem Bahadur Rai (66) of Pashchim Sabje Busty got swept away by the inundated Ode Khola.
Rai had left home to buy some essentials from the shops located on the other side of the rivulet, but he did not return even after several hours. When his family members started searching for him, his lifeless body was found on the bank of Ode Khola between boulders.
Incessant rainfall over the past few days have turned all big and small drains (jhoras) and rivulets into swollen-up, fast-moving entities. Rai would have been alive and well had there been a bridge across Ode Khola, rued his family and neighbours.
