SNS, Siliguri, 9 July: Assistant secretary of the state education department associated with the pension and provident fund section, Sangita Banerjee, today visited Uttarkanya with a view to developing infrastructure for setting up a separate directorate that will prepare pension papers for primary and secondary school teachers tentatively from 1 August.
During her visit to the North Bengal secretariat, a group of leaders associated with the Trinamul Congress-backed Shiksha Cell led by Jayata Kar met her and demanded another wing that will look into the pension papers for teachers in colleges and universities too.
During the interaction, Miss Banerjee informed them that the state government had planned to start a separate directorate here for the primary and secondary teachers’ pension.
According to her, the pension payment order (PPO) will be issued for them from here, and that the office will start functioning tentatively from 1 August.
After that, the office will ready pension papers for the employees associated with panchayat and municipalities, she said.
“When we demanded opening of another wing to look into papers for teachers of colleges and universities, the assistant secretary said the pension matters for college and university teachers are under the Department of
Public Instruction (DPI), and that we may request the education minister Partha Chatterjee in this regard,” the convener of the Darjeeling district Shiksha Cell, Jayanta Kar, said.
Sources said that the north Bengal development department will provide the basic requirements and develop the infrastructure to begin the work from Uttarkanya.
A senior officer from the Audit and Accounts Service, who is presently posted in Jalpaiguri, has been asked to start the pension section at Uttarkanya.
Notably, chief minister Mamata Banerjee, during her North Bengal visit in the first week of June, announced that a separate finance directorate would be set up at Uttarkanya to prepare pension papers for teachers. According to her, people of North Bengal do not need to go Kolkata for the pension after the office starts functioning here.
