EOI, Siliguri, 28 June 2014:A woman was detained Friday afternoon with nearly 5kg of cocaine at the Bagdogra airport. She was about to board a Druk Airlines flight for Bangkok. Customs department officials also seized $1,000 and some Thai Baht from her.
The woman has been identified as Lalita Rai (30), a resident of Sukhaypokhari.
Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (Siliguri wing) advocate Ratan Kumar Banik said during interrogation, Lalita said her cousin Aruna Rai (32), a Nepalese citizen, had offered her Rs1 lakh if she took the contraband to the Thai capital and she could not refuse the offer. As per the plan, two Nepalese men met Lalita near the Bagdogra airport around 10am Friday morning and handed her a briefcase containing the cocaine.
Banik said the estimated market price of the contraband is nearly Rs4 crore.
Lalita was presented before Assistant Chief Judicial Magistrate Keya Mandal who ruled out her bail plea.
Siliguri police superintendent Jag Mohan said a probe is underway and the police are trying to find out the chief culprits.
