Tree plantation drive in Kurseong to address water problems

EOI, 23 June 2014: Amid the pestering water scarcity issue in the area and to sustain natural water sources, the Kurseong unit of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha today planted trees in the Dhobi Khola and Rohini Gate areas under the banner of the Himalayan Socio-Economic Research & Rural Society, a Kurseong-based NGO.
Talking to reporters, Society president Gunjay Lama said Kurseong residents have been long affected by paucity of water, and the plantation drive was undertaken to stress the importance of trees and plant life in ensuring availability of water. He added tree saplings will be planted on both sides of the Rohini Gate area and the move will help attract more tourists. The tree plantation programme will continue till July 3.
GJM leaders including Kurseong Municipality chairman Samirdip Blon and GTA executive member Anit Thapa, among others were present at the campaign. Cyprus, Jarul, Kemuna and Paanisat will be planted during the 10-day programme.
Lama also noted that mere planting of saplings is not enough and the plants need to be nurtured on a regular basis. Hence, the Society has decided to monitor and take appropriate measures to ensure the plants grow to become actual trees.
He added the management and workers of Castleton tea estate have also extended their support to the endeavour.
