Mamata's 'parivartan' spurious...... people have more faith on the Gorkhas than on the police for their security.......dream of Gorkha brothers is our dream," Modi
THT, Kolkata, April 10, 2014: Narendra Modi attacked Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Thursday, saying she failed to bring about parivartan (change) by resorting to vote-bank politics.
"I thought your chief minister would criticise the Left and Congress. But I find she criticises Modi hundred times a day, and without it she can't digest her meals," Modi said at a rally in Siliguri.
Modi's speech was sharply different from the one he delivered on February 5 in Kolkata, when he remarked it will be a good idea to have his government in Delhi and Mamata's in Bengal.
BJP president Rajnath Singh also had promised his party would sympathetically consider Mamata's demands for a fiscal relief package for Bengal if it comes to power. The saffron party saw in her a potential ally.
But after she categorically ruled out any alliance with either the BJP or Congress, Modi has sharpened his attack on her.
To control Trinamool Congress, a strong government is needed at the centre, Modi argued.
He came down heavily on Mamata Banerjee's pro-nimority policies without naming it specifically.
"I can see Bengal has changed its mind about bringing in parivartan, not the spurious parivartan (referring to TMC's takeover in 2011)," he said.
Modi also said those responsible for the Saradha scam should be punished. This is another soft spot for Mamata as several of her leaders were seen to be close to and benefitting from the group.
The BJP prime ministerial candidate mentioned two thorny issues of infiltrators from Bangladesh and the demand for a Gorkhaland.
"The dream of Gorkha brothers is our dream," said Modi without specifically referring to their demand of a separate state.
Modi also said people have more faith on the Gorkhas than on the police for their security.
But Modi was far more specific on the issue of infiltration from Bangladesh, a burning issue in these parts of the country.
"Hasn't the infiltrators jeopardised your living here?" asked Modi. And the crowd roared in approval.
Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) president Bimal Gurung was present on the dais. The Morcha is supporting the BJP candidate in three constituencies of Bengal including Darjeeling.
