Calcutta high court adjourns bail hearing of Bimal Gurung
TNN | Mar 26, 2014: KOLKATA: Calcutta high court on Tuesday adjourned the hearing on the anticipatory bail petition filed by GJM president Bimal Gurung and his wife Asha in the Madan Tamang murder case on technical grounds.
The couple, accused in the May 21, 2010 murder of the Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League president, had earlier moved an anticipatory bail plea before the Darjeeling sessions court. But the lower court rejected their plea.
A division bench of justices Jayanta Biswas and Indrajit Chatterjee adjourned the case till April 1 as necessary papers in the case had not reached the court. It was stated in the petition that both Gurung and his wife were innocent and were in no way involved in Madan Tamang's murder. The petition alleged that political rivalry was driving the ruling party to harass the couple by accusing them in the case.
The GJM leader and his wife had filed the anticipatory bail petitions in the Darjeeling sessions court on March 5 after the bodyguard of Madan Tamang filed FIRs against 36 people alleging that they were involved in the daylight murder of Tamang on May 21, 2010. Among the 36 accused, 18 are in judicial custody in Kolkata, seven are on bail and one accused has died.
