Unique ID for students - Code for ICSE, ISC pupils for exams, duplicate documents

TT, Calcutta, Feb. 8: Students taking the ICSE and ISC exams this year are being given a permanent unique identification code that will replace the index and registration numbers and can also be used to get duplicate result-related documents from a computerised database.
The code will remain valid for both the Class X and XII board exams and will not have to be changed in case of a school shift.
Now, students who change school after Class X have to apply afresh to the Council of Indian School Certificate Examinations for their registration and index numbers, which they were originally given in Class IX. These numbers have to be mentioned in the board exam answer scripts.
The unique identification code, too, will be issued in Class IX but will remain valid for life. Students and former students will be able to get their duplicate certificates, mark sheets and other documents from the council at any time by providing the code.
The code is part of a series of steps the council is taking to computerise its operations. As manual files will no longer be maintained, it will be easier to track students by feeding the code into the system.
“The code is a seven-digit number that will be used uniquely to identify a student even after he or she completes school,” said Gerry Arathoon, the secretary and chief executive of the Council of Indian School Certificate Examinations.
Students taking the board exams this year have already been given their codes. The ISC exams will begin on February 10 and continue till April 7. The ICSE exams will start on March 3 and continue till March 29.>br> The students will have to mention the code in their answer scripts instead of the registration and index numbers. “The UID code will replace the registration and index numbers and can be used for both the ICSE and ISC exams,” Arathoon said.
He said the move to allot the code was taken as part of the council’s modernising plan. The entire examination and evaluation system as well as the governance of the council are being digitised.
The council has also decided to introduce bar-coded answer scripts from this year to ensure confidentiality during evaluation.
