JMM demands tribal area status to 444 mouzas

Rajesh Pradhan, EOI, BANARHAT, 8 Feb 2014: The North Bengal unit of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha today demanded tribal area status to 444 Adivasi-populated mouzas in the Dooars-Terai. North Bengal JMM vice-president Peter Minz said the government should classify the mouzas as tribal areas.
He stressed development can only be brought about if the mouzas are deemed as tribal areas. The Adivasis of the region will greatly benefit from the new status, he added.
Minz also claimed the Tribal Advisory Council recently announced by the state government to be the brainchild of the JMM. “We want the Tribal Advisory Council to be managed from the Dooars instead of Kolkata,” he said. “Despite the formation of the TAC, it has been failed to look after the interests of the Adivasis of the region.”
The JMM welcomes chief minister Mamta Banerjee to the Dooars on February 12, added the vice-president.
