Hill marathon today

Vivek Chhetri, TT, Darjeeling, Jan. 11: Darjeeling is set to run for peace tomorrow at the Amyway Darjeeling Police Marathon, which is being organised by Darjeeling police and the state tourism department in association with The Telegraph.
The 13km run will start from Ghoombhanyang near Ghoom and finish at the town’s most famous promenade, Chowrasta.
“We did the medical check-up of the participants today and the response has been tremendous. Till late this evening, around 1,800 participants turned up for the medical test,” said Sudeep Sarkar, the additional superintendent of police, Darjeeling.
Among the 1,800-odd runners, around 1,200 are from outside the Darjeeling hills. “Participants have come from Sikkim, Calcutta and other states such as Assam, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan,” Sarkar said.
The motto of the marathon is ‘let’s run for peace’. The winners in both the male and female categories will receive a cash prize of Rs 1.25 lakh each. “The first and second runners-up will get Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000, respectively, while the top 100 finishers will get certificates,” Sarkar said.
Gift hampers worth Rs 10,000 are also up for grabs for the top 10 finishers in both the male and female categories.
Sports minister Madan Mitra and north Bengal development minister Gautam Deb will jointly flag off the marathon.
