Exports from Sikkim cross R100 crore mark

SNS, Gangtok, 6 November 2013: Despite unreliable roads and inclement weather, bilateral border trade between Sikkim and Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) of China has made transactions surpassing past records in September with exports from Sikkim having crossed the crore mark. 
Customs department records have revealed the Sikkim traders exported goods worth Rs 1,40,70,400 in September while bringing in imports to the tune of Rs 21,14,466 over in course of the Nathula trade. 
By and large, the border trade is still heavily in Sikkim’s favour, according to the records. Sikkim traders imported mostly carpets, readymade garments, blankets and quilts in September while in the export segment, vegetable oil pre-dominated, accounting for Rs 64,14,400, the records reveal. 
As compared to the transactions made in August this season, September recorded two times higher business, the report states.
In the month of August, Sikkim traders exported goods worth Rs 64.80 lakh while making imports to the tune of Rs 10,60,114.
