Lama to kick off poll campaign on 9 Nov

SNS, Siliguri, 30 October 2013: The noted academic and former Sikkim University vice-chancellor, Mr Mahendra P Lama, who has decided to contest from the Darjeeling constituency for the next year's parliamentary elections as an independent candidate, would kick off the poll campaign at Sukna on 9 November.
"It will be my maiden campaign meeting for the Lok Sabha polls,” Mr Lama said while addressing a Press meet in Siliguri.
Dwelling on the separate statehood demands for the people of the Darjeeling Hills and the Dooars, he said his concept of such a state would not have ethnic identity as its fulcrum.
“It would be an inclusive one, taking all, irrespective of ethnicities, on board. We would make the demand of such a state the thrust of our poll campaign,” he said.
Told that the state government has ruled out any possibility of dividing the state, he said they would raise the demand despite resistance and denial.

  1. However insensitive it may sound MP Lama makes sense as there are a lot of communities and ethnicities which are at stake here. Crying out Gorkhaland only for the Gorkhas has isolated a lot of them. If he manages to bring about inclusion and cooperation from all different stakeholders out there and if he is successful in unifying the sincere leaders of some political parties and focus on a more collaborative approach on leadership, I say that there is much hope for all of us.
