BIRESWAR BANERJEE, TT, Singbulli Tea Estate, Aug. 23: Trinamul minister Gautam Deb and other leaders of the party today distributed food grains in Singbulli garden in Kurseong subdivision at a time the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha was enforcing a shutdown in the hills.
Deb said the distribution would continue till the situation normalised in the hills.
This afternoon, rice, flour and potatoes were distributed among 100-odd residents of Singbulli, 40km from Siliguri. “Each family was given 10kg of rice, 5kg of wheat and 2kg of potatoes,” Deb said.
He added that food grains were also distributed by Trinamul in Pussimbing garden in Darjeeling subdivision today. Morcha has a considerable presence on both the hill estates.
“We do not differentiate between the hills and plains and we have come here to share the sufferings of the people,” Deb told journalists at Singbulli Primary School from where the relief was distributed.
A convoy of 10 cars reached Singbulli around 2pm today and food was distributed in the presence of 70-odd police and central paramilitary force personnel till 2.45pm. Around 300 families live in the garden and members of 100-odd families collected the items.
“Today, our workers have also distributed relief on Pussimbing Tea Estate,” Deb said. “If the strike continues, our party will distribute relief in other remote areas like Gorubathan, Pedong and Latpanchar.”
