Confusion lingers over hills ‘bandh’- Bandh will be indefinite: Bimal; GJAC ‘support’ for two days

SNS, Siliguri, 23 August 2013: The GJMM’s decision to continue with the indefinite bandh in the Darjeeling Hills from tomorrow has been taken without getting allies on board, said the Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee chairman, Mr Enos Das Pradhan today. 

However, confusion lingers on the nature of the shutdown as the people are still in the dark as to whether the bandh would be for two days from tomorrow or it would drag on even after Sunday. 

The GJMM chief, Mr Bimal Gurung said it would be indefinite while addressing people at Singhamari in Darjeeling yesterday. 

However, the confusion is still there as contradictory statements are emerging from the party leadership. 

“The GJMM, a major constituent of the GJAC, took the decision unilaterally. We can understand the compulsion behind the decision”, said Mr Das Pradhan. 

Over 700 party activists, including their key party leaders, have been rounded up so far. More are on the cards. We would support the bandh for two days starting from tomorrow to empathise with them,” he said. 

Asked whether they would support shutdown in case it drags beyond Sunday, he said the next course of action would be decided through GJAC meeting that would be held soon. 

It is learnt from the GJMM sources that the present and the former MPs and MLAs from the Hills would fax to the Centre and the state government as well as some Opposition leaders in Delhi and Kolkata, demanding separate state of Gorkhaland as a solution to the identity crisis the Nepali-speaking people have been facing.
