PIL against strike

TT, Calcutta, Aug. 5 : A public interest litigation (PIL) was moved before Calcutta High Court today demanding an order declaring bandh in the hills by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) “illegal” and “ unconstitutional”.
The division bench of Chief Justice A.K. Mishra and Justice Joymalya Bagchi assured the lawyer who filed the petition, that the case would be heard by Wednesday. Ramaprasad Sarkar, an advocate of the court , moved the petition demanding a ban on strikes or bandhs in the hills.
“Bandhs and strikes are against the provisions of the Constitution. Thousands of residents and traders in the three subdivisions of Darjeeling have been badly suffering because of the strike,” Sarkar, after moving the petition said.
The hills are in the middle of an indefinite general strike that began on Saturday.
