GP Boards in Dooars formed finally

EOIC, KALCHINI, 19 Aug 2013: The process of Panchayat Board formations that started on Sunday in the Dooars concluded peacefully today. While four panchayat boards were formed yesterday, seven more were formed today.

According to block administration sources, the GJM-Trinamool alliance has formed the Jaigaon 2 Panchayat board. GJM’s Pasang Dikki Sherpa has been elected as the Pradhan and TMC’s Sangita Rathore as the Upa-Pradhan. The RSP, GJM and JMM have formed the Mangali Gram Panchayat with RSP’s Binu Thapa as Pradhan and JMM’s Bijay Lohar as Upa-Pradhan. Meanwhile, the Satali Gram Panchayat has gone to the Congress with Manoj Barua and Ravi Kerkatta as Pradhan and Upa-Pradhan, respectively. The Congress is also heading the Latabari GP board with Prankumar Sarkar and Sanchita Lohar as Pradhan and Upa-Pradhan respectively.

 In Chuwapara, the TMC-RSP has constituted the GP board with Amsi Nikke from the RSP as the Pradhan and the TMC’s Sabir Lohar as the Upa-Pradhan. The Gorapara GP board will be headed by a Congress-RSP alliance where Lilawati Gwala (Congress) has been elected as Pradhan and Kamali Mahali (RSP) has become the Upa-Pradhan. In Rajavatkhawa, the RSP’s Reena Lama has been elected Pradhan and the GJM’s Aruna Adhikari has been elected the Upa-Pradhan.

Though the board formation procedure went about largely peacefully, there were some disruptions when the RSP won the Pradhan’s seat in Rajavatkhawa GP. According to sources, the JMM, Congress and TMC were to form the Rajavatkhawa board. However, the TMC candidate from Buxaduar, Rahil Dukpa, inadvertently voted for the RSP’s Reena Lama, which gave the latter the majority. (Report by PRADIP LAMA)

The GJM-JMM alliance today took out rallies at Vatpara and Achapara areas to celebrate its first ever victory in Kalchini GP. Members of both the Adivasi and Gorkha communities were seen together in celebration mode. The occasion was a festive one with the supporters danced and played with Holi.

GJM women’s wing member Jayanti Rai said emotionally, “This is the first time in Dooars’ history that the Gorkha-Adivasis have won in the Kalchini and Jaigaon Gram Panchayats. For 15 years the Congress and other parties ruled Kalchini Panchayat and suppressed the people. But now the Panchayat has come to the Gorkha-Adivasis. We will now show what development is.”

Meanwhile, GJM youth wing members said they would not remain complacent after the victory but participate in the Gorkhaland agitation
