Gorkhas in Delhi unite to adopt three resolutions, send it across to GJAC

KalimNews: With the Gorkhaland movement gathering steam all across India, Gorkhas residing in the nation's capital from different walks of life gathered under one roof to discuss about the political situation in the hills and Dooars region.

The gathering, which took place on 28th August 2013 did not fall under the umbrella of any political party. In fact, the participants of the meeting gathered as a group of common people, to resolve and organize the largely ignored voice of the ‘Janta’. The gathering witnessed academicians, university students and researchers, senior journalists, professionals, social workers and businessmen turn up and make their presence felt, sharing insights about the issue of Gorkhaland.

The discussion lasted for more than 2-3 hours. A number of topics were brought up, which could help the people’s movement become strong and thus find a way to achieve a separate state of Gorkhaland. Overall, the group discussed about the political situation that has cropped up in Darjeeling and Dooars region with the formation of Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee (GJAC). The gathered people seriously felt that there was a sense of mistrust among people and leaders, which has arose due to GJM's reluctance to disown the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA). The meeting also felt that the movement should move forward without affecting education in the hills or the Dooars region.

But, above all the group unanimously after further planning and discussions came to a common decision, where three important resolutions were adopted. They are as follows:

1)      GTA does not fulfill the aspirations of Indian Gorkhas. No administrative arrangement other than Gorkhaland is acceptable.

2)      GTA has to be rejected within a definite timeline. GJAC has to set a clear date for the rejection of GTA. Vague language such as ‘rejecting it at an appropriate time’ is not acceptable.

3)      As common people, we appeal that the leadership respect the sentiments of the Janta. Should the leadership fail to acknowledge the aspirations of the people, there is every possibility that the force of the people will blow away the leadership.

The resolution was signed by those who were present in the gathering. The above given resolutions have been sent across to Gorkhaland Joint Action Committee (GJAC) and have been communicated via telephone with GJAC Chairman as well. With the all important meeting of the GJAC scheduled for today, these resolutions are also expected to be shared among members of the GJAC and hence lend an ear to the voices of Gorkhas not only from Delhi, but across the nation as well.

The group, as a whole has decided to meet frequently and also form linkages with like-minded people. At the next meeting of the group, a more formal approach would be adopted and the group would be given an organisational set-up as well.
