Restoring Educational Sanctity: New School Teachers (SSC passed) in West Bengal Barred from Active Politics and Elections
Unveiled following a high-level state cabinet meeting at Nabanna, the policy dictates that newly appointed teachers will be barred from running for or holding positions in panchayats, municipalities, the state Assembly, and the Lok Sabha.
Addressing reporters, the Chief Minister clarified that existing teachers already holding political or elected roles will be granted an exemption and their current freedoms will remain uncompromised, as no such legal restriction existed at the time of their original appointment. However, this explicit clause will now be formally woven into the recruitment rules for all future SSC appointments.
Highlighting that West Bengal is simply aligning with practices already successfully implemented in major states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, Adhikari emphasized that educational institutions must be treated like temples. He strongly blamed the decline of academic standards on the detrimental mindsets of the 34-year Communist rule and the subsequent 15-year Trinamool Congress regime, asserting that this reform is a vital step toward reviving the pristine sanctity of classrooms, campuses, and the dignity of the teaching profession.
Complementing this major governance overhaul, the cabinet meeting also advanced the state's aggressive employment and industrial agenda. Adhikari reported that the administration has paved the way for roughly 60,000 new job openings across recent cabinet meetings, highlighted by the latest approval of 1,199 new positions spanning urban development, health, and family planning following an earlier clearance of 45,000 posts.
These upcoming vacancies will be filled swiftly through transparent, merit-based examinations and official notifications. Furthermore, the state cabinet granted its ultimate stamp of approval to a brand-new industrial policy designed to magnetize fresh investments and stimulate economic acceleration across Bengal, which the Chief Minister is scheduled to formally reveal to the public at Nabanna Sabhaghar on November 5.
Shifting focus to ongoing accountability measures, the Chief Minister addressed the dramatic arrest earlier in the day of former tourism and information & cultural affairs minister Indranil Sen, noting that the former minister had long been under investigation.
Accusing Sen of accumulating vast wealth by exploiting his ministerial clout and closeness to the former Chief Minister—with whom he frequently performed duet songs at state-sponsored events—Adhikari issued a stern warning that Sen is merely the tip of the iceberg. Hinting that corrupt networks extending to the upper echelons of the previous administration will face similar consequences, the Chief Minister urged the public to stay tuned, declaring that no one involved in past corruption will be spared.
