Close Call for Election Observers as Wild Elephant Wrecks Bungalow
According to forest officials, the elephant, a tusker, entered the bungalow premises in the evening, destroyed the kitchen, consumed stored food, and retreated back into the forest. Sudhansu noted, “The incident occurred just after we completed our work and returned to Alipurduar. Fortunately, we were not present at night.”
Bimal Kumar, Field Director of the Buxa Tiger Reserve, highlighted the dangers of human presence in elephant habitats: “Staying in such areas is extremely unsafe. The kitchen has been completely destroyed.”
This close shave underscores the risks election officials face while performing duties in forested regions, especially during the busy pre-poll period.
