Two-Day International Conference on Computational Mathematics and Applications Concludes in Gangtok
The conference, held on October 29 and 30 at Hotel Lemon Tree, Gangtok, was jointly organised by the National Institute of Technology Sikkim, the National Institute of Technology Silchar and the National Institute of Technology Nagaland.
The international event brought together academicians, researchers, scholars and experts from India and abroad to deliberate on emerging developments in computational mathematics and its diverse applications.
ICCMA 2026 was inaugurated on October 29, 2026, in the presence of distinguished academicians and dignitaries.
Mr Raju Basnet, Hon'ble Minister of Education, Government of Sikkim, attended the inaugural session as the Chief Guest.
Professor Ivana Budinská of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Slovakia; Professor R. K. Sharma of Delhi Technological University; and Professor Pradip Kumar Jain, Director, National Institute of Technology Patna, attended the programme as Guests of Honour.
The inaugural session was also graced by Professor Mahesh Chandra Govil, Chief Patron and Director, NIT Sikkim, and Dr Kedar Nath Das, Conference Chair, along with other distinguished guests, participants and members of the organising committee.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Raju Basnet congratulated the three NITs for bringing together researchers and scholars from across India and abroad and emphasised the importance of academic collaboration in advancing scientific knowledge and innovation.
Highlighting the foundational role of mathematics in modern science and technology, the Hon'ble Minister spoke about its growing relevance in areas such as artificial intelligence, medical applications, engineering and weather forecasting.
He also assured continued support from the Government of Sikkim for academic and research initiatives that promote knowledge, opportunities and greater exposure for students in the state.
Professor Ivana Budinská, in her address, highlighted the importance of international academic collaboration and encouraged researchers and institutions from India and Slovakia to explore greater cooperation and create meaningful synergies through the exchange of knowledge and expertise.
Speaking on the occasion, Professor R. K. Sharma highlighted the complementary relationship between theoretical and computational mathematics. He observed that while computational methods provide powerful tools for exploring and estimating solutions to complex problems, mathematical theory and rigorous proof remain essential for establishing the validity and reliability of such results.
In his remarks, Professor Mahesh Chandra Govil, Director, NIT Sikkim, highlighted the increasing importance of mathematical modelling, numerical methods, scientific computing and data-driven techniques in addressing complex contemporary challenges.
He stressed the need for computational results to be accurate, stable and reliable and called for greater interdisciplinary research involving mathematics, engineering, computer science and other related fields.
On the occasion, the Book of Abstracts of ICCMA 2026 was formally released by the Chief Guest, Mr Raju Basnet, in the presence of the distinguished dignitaries and participants.
The conference featured a series of academic and technical sessions focusing on contemporary areas of computational mathematics and its applications.
These sessions provided an important platform for researchers, faculty members and students to present their work, exchange ideas and engage in meaningful academic discussions.
A total of 101 research papers were presented during the two-day conference by academicians and research scholars from India and abroad.
Seventeen outstanding research papers were recognised with Best Paper Awards for their significant academic contributions and quality of research.
