Suspected militants set fire to abandoned houses in Manipur's Kangpokpi

PTI, Oct 7, 2026, Imphal: Suspected militants on Wednesday set ablaze several abandoned houses belonging to members of the Kuki community in Manipur's Kangpokpi district, officials said.

Several rounds were fired in the air before the wooden houses were torched around 2 pm, they said. The exact number of houses damaged was yet to be ascertained, though villagers claimed at least three were destroyed.

No casualties were reported, and the identity of the perpetrators was not immediately known, an official said.

Kailenjang, located near Naga-majority Senapati district, has remained largely deserted since residents fled amid intensifying clashes between the Naga and Kuki communities. Security forces are monitoring the situation, officials said.

More than 40 people have been killed and dozens of houses burnt since violence between the Naga and Kuki communities broke out in February this year.
