DRI seizes gold worth more than Rs 12 crore
Acting on a tip-off, DRI officials conducted an operation in the Ashram Road area near New Town in Cooch Behar.
The seized gold is estimated to be worth around Rs 12.36 crore.
Four alleged smugglers were arrested in connection with the international gold smuggling case.
The accused have been identified as Rasidul Sheikh, Monowar Rahman, Mabidul Sheikh and Mizanur Rahman, all residents of Dinhata in Cooch Behar district.
According to DRI sources, the accused were travelling by bus from Dinhata towards Siliguri when the operation was carried out.
The suspects were intercepted and searched by the investigators.
They recovered the gold from their specially-designed waist belts.
The gold biscuits bore clear foreign markings and seals, indicating that they had allegedly been brought into India from Bangladesh through the international border, informed DRI.
Special Public Prosecutor, DRI, Ratan Banik said the four accused were produced before the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court.
Their bail pleas were rejected and the court remanded them to seven days of judicial custody.
