Bone Marrow Transplantation Crucial for Complex Blood Disorders; Dr. Rajat Bhattacharya Honoured
Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Oct 3, 2026, Kalimpong: Bone marrow transplantation has emerged as an important treatment option for patients suffering from several complex blood disorders, including leukemia, particularly in cases where the body's natural ability to produce healthy blood cells is severely compromised. Stem cell and bone marrow transplantation can provide new treatment possibilities for such patients, although identifying a suitable donor and ensuring compatibility between the transplanted cells and the recipient remain among the major challenges associated with the procedure. Against this backdrop, haplo-identical bone marrow transplantation is gaining increasing importance as an alternative in carefully selected cases.
Renowned hematologist, hemato-oncologist and bone marrow transplant specialist Dr. Rajat Bhattacharya has received special recognition for his pioneering role and long-standing contribution to the development and practice of haplo-identical bone marrow transplantation in Eastern India. He was presented with the ‘Dr. Sachiprasad Bhattacharya Memorial Award 2026’ at a ceremony held at the Annex Hall of Mahajati Sadan in Kolkata.
The programme was organized by the Picnic Garden Leela Seba Society and brought together discussions on bone marrow transplantation, its growing significance in contemporary medicine and the advances that have expanded treatment possibilities for patients with serious blood disorders. Dr. Bhattacharya was honoured for his sustained work and contribution to the field, particularly in advancing haplo-identical transplantation in Eastern India.
Explaining the significance of the procedure, Dr. Rajat Bhattacharya said that haplo-identical transplantation makes it possible to obtain stem cells from a family member who shares approximately 50 per cent of the patient's genetic characteristics. This approach can therefore create a potential treatment pathway in situations where a fully matched donor is not available, subject to appropriate medical assessment and clinical suitability.
Dr. Soumya Bhattacharya, a distinguished physician and Secretary of the Picnic Garden Leela Seba Society, highlighted the wider significance of the technique. According to her, haplo-identical transplantation has considerably broadened the pool of potential family donors available for bone marrow transplantation, making it an important development in the evolving landscape of modern medical treatment.
The occasion also featured the Sachiprasad Bhattacharya Memorial Lecture 2026, where detailed discussions focused on different aspects of bone marrow transplantation, recent advances in medical science and emerging possibilities in the field. The programme provided an opportunity to highlight how developments in transplantation medicine are creating additional options for patients who may otherwise face significant difficulties in finding a suitably matched donor.
The organizers also placed emphasis on encouraging scientific curiosity and a spirit of research among the younger generation. As part of this broader initiative, an inter-school science quiz competition for 2026 was organized for students studying at the secondary and higher-secondary levels across West Bengal.
The science quiz was designed not only to test students' knowledge but also to encourage them to develop a scientific outlook, curiosity and an interest in research. The initiative reflected the organizers' broader objective of promoting scientific thinking among young people and inspiring students to explore science and research beyond the boundaries of the classroom and conventional academic learning.
The programme thus combined recognition of significant contributions to modern medical science with an effort to inspire the next generation to develop a deeper interest in scientific inquiry, research and innovation.
