Kolkata Police Commando from Kalimpong's 7th Mile Found Dead in Barracks; Investigation Underway

PTI, September 19, 2026, Kolkata: A Kolkata Police commando was found hanging inside a toilet at the Police Training School (PTS) here on Saturday, an officer said.

The deceased, identified as Deepak Tamang (49), was found hanging from an overhead pipeline inside the fourth-floor toilet of the commando barracks, he said. Tamang was a resident of the Kalimpong district.

According to the police officer, the toilet had remained locked from inside for some time, prompting his colleagues to raise an alarm. When there was no response despite repeated calls, they broke open the door and found Tamang hanging inside. His colleagues brought him down and took him to the SSKM Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

"Preliminary findings indicated that Tamang may have died by suicide, although the exact circumstances leading to the incident were yet to be established," he said.

"At this stage, we are examining all possible aspects of the incident. The circumstances surrounding his death are being investigated, and the post-mortem report will also be taken into consideration," the officer said.

Tamang, a resident of the 7th Mile area in Kalimpong, had been serving in the Kolkata Police commando force for several years and was regarded as a skilled and experienced officer by his colleagues.

The police officer said there were indications of a ligature mark and other preliminary findings consistent with suicide. However, the exact cause and circumstances of the death are being investigated. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination and his family in Kalimpong has been informed, police said.

No written complaint or FIR was lodged in connection with the death till the filing of the report, but the police have initiated an investigation into the unnatural death as per procedure.
