Heavy rain, thunderstorms likely in parts of West Bengal till Wednesday

PTI, September 6, 2026, Kolkata : Parts of West Bengal are likely to witness heavy rain and thunderstorms till September 9 due to active monsoon and a low-pressure area moving eastwards from Uttar Pradesh, the weather department said on Sunday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said thunderstorms accompanied by winds gusting up to 40 km per hour are likely over most places of south Bengal, including Kolkata.

With a low-pressure area over southwest Uttar Pradesh likely to move east-northeastward, heavy rain will occur in Purba and Paschim Bardhaman districts, Birbhum, Hooghly, Nadia, and North 24 Parganas, it said.

According to the IMD, heavy downpour is very likely over the sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar till September 9.

Kolkata and neighbouring Salt Lake recorded significant rainfall in 24 hours till 8.30 am on Sunday at 47 mm and 50 mm respectively.

Other places in south Bengal were, however, almost dry during the period.
