Former West Bengal MLA Biswajit Das Arrested Following Recovery of Unlicensed Firearm

PTI, September 28, 2026, Barasat : Former West Bengal MLA Biswajit Das was arrested on Monday after an illegal firearm was allegedly recovered from his car in North 24 Parganas district, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted Das’s car in the Gopalnagar market area and searched the vehicle, recovering the firearm, they said.

Police have not disclosed details of the firearm allegedly seized from the vehicle.

Das was elected from the Bangaon Uttar assembly constituency on a TMC ticket in 2011 and 2016. He contested the 2021 assembly elections on a BJP ticket from Bagdah and won, but returned to the TMC after the polls.

In 2024, the TMC appointed Das president of its Bongaon organisational district. He later resigned as MLA to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Bongaon on a TMC ticket, but lost.

The TMC fielded him from Bangaon Uttar in the assembly elections held earlier this year, but he was defeated by BJP’s Ashok Kirtania.

Das later sided with the rebel camp of the TMC amid a split in the party.

Reacting to his arrest, Habra BJP MLA Debdas Mandal said Das should have been arrested earlier.

A former Bongaon Municipality councillor alleged that Das had “harassed” several people during his tenure as MLA and accused him of being involved in “bomb and gun politics”.
