Bengali Made Mandatory in West Bengal Government Services, Review Set for Year-End

MP | 7 September 2026 | Kolkata: The West Bengal government has directed that Bengali be used mandatorily in state administration and public services from September 1, with a review of its usage to be conducted by the end of the year.
The directive, issued by the PAR Department, follows Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s announcement in the Assembly on July 20.
It seeks to make Bengali the principal language for government-citizen interaction, including applications, replies, notifications, notices, directions and public-service information.
Grievance redressal, including complaint registration, investigation-related communication and disposal of grievances, will also be conducted in Bengali, including in police and other law-enforcement agencies.
The government has proposed a phased transition covering official files, departmental correspondence, reports and digital services, alongside upgrades to computer systems and records infrastructure.
