Nepal Flash Flood Catastrophe More Than 95 Dead: Bhote Koshi Surge Leaves Widespread Destruction Across Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading
Sources said that the disaster struck shortly after an earthquake measuring 4.4 magnitude was recorded near the Nepal-China border at around 8:37 a.m. (Nepal Time) Initial reports have suggested that the earthquake may have contributed to a landslide, avalanche or the collapse of a natural blockage in the river system. However, the exact cause of the sudden and exceptionally powerful flood remains under investigation.
Nepal’s Flood Forecasting Division said information received from the Chinese side indicated that the flood may have occurred after a natural blockage or dam formed in the river suddenly breached. The division warned that the danger had not completely passed because the blockage had reportedly not yet fully cleared.
According to a warning issued by the Flood Forecasting Division, a lake formed behind the blockage had not completely drained, leaving a continuing risk in the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems. People living near the rivers were urged to remain in safe locations and avoid returning to vulnerable areas until authorities declare conditions safe.
Hydrologist Sauharda Joshi said authorities were still trying to determine the exact location of the blockage. He explained that satellite imagery was expected to provide important information about where the river had been obstructed. Although the initial force of the flood had weakened, he warned that the level of risk remained significant for downstream communities.
Death Toll and Missing Persons Remain Unclear
Reports from different stages of the disaster have produced varying casualty figures as rescue teams continue recovering bodies from several districts.
According to the latest figures cited in the information provided by Nepal Police, 95 bodies had been recovered, with some still awaiting identification. Earlier information from government authorities had reported a lower number of confirmed deaths, while later reports indicated that the toll was continuing to rise.
The recovered bodies have been reported from Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Chitwan, Tanahu and Nawalpur East.
Nepal Police reported that the recovered victims included women, men, boys and girls, as well as a number of unidentified bodies. In Dhading alone, police reported recovering bodies from both male and female victims, while additional bodies were recovered in Nuwakot and other downstream districts.
The identification process is continuing, and authorities are expected to release updated figures as families and officials are able to identify the victims.
Dozens of Security Personnel Unaccounted For
The disaster has also caused serious losses among Nepal’s security forces.
According to the latest figures provided in the reports, 79 security personnel remain out of contact, including:
- 28 Nepal Police personnel,
- 13 Armed Police Force personnel,
- 44 members of the Nepal Army
In Rasuwa, reports said that nine Armed Police Force personnel had been deployed on duty when the flood struck. Five of them later established contact, while four remained unaccounted for.
Nepal Police personnel have reportedly gone out of contact from several locations, including Timure, Rasuwagadhi, Syaphrubesi, Mailung, Betrawati and Haku.
The Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police are continuing search-and-rescue operations across affected areas.
Hundreds of Tourists and Travellers Remain Unreachable
The disaster has also created an international concern because hundreds of tourists and travellers were in or around the affected region.
According to preliminary information collected by the Nepal Tourism Board, 384 tourists and travellers remain out of contact, including:
- 291 foreign nationals,
- 93 Nepali nationals
The Tourism Board has emphasised that these figures represent people who have not yet been reached or accounted for and do not necessarily mean that all of them are confirmed missing or deceased.
The information is being verified with travel agencies, guides, local authorities and security agencies.
Rasuwa attracts large numbers of both domestic and international visitors because of destinations such as Langtang and Gosaikunda. The sudden disaster therefore affected not only local residents but also travellers moving through the region.
Sixty Hydropower Workers Also Unaccounted For
The flood has caused severe disruption to Nepal’s hydropower sector.
According to reports, 60 workers at the under-construction Langtang Khola Hydroelectric Project remain out of contact following the disaster.
The Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN), reported that the flood damaged 14 hydropower and solar projects operated or being developed by the government and private sector.
Its preliminary assessment identified:
- Nine operating projects affected,
- Five projects under construction affected,
- A combined affected capacity of approximately 748 MW,
- About 354 MW of operating generation capacity affected,
- About 394 MW of projects under construction affected
Among the projects reportedly affected in Rasuwa are Upper Trishuli 1, Rasuwagadhi, Rasuwa Bhotekoshi, Upper Mailung A, Sanjen Khola, Langtang Khola and Chilime.
Projects in Nuwakot, including Trishuli and Devighat, have also reportedly sustained damage.
Other reports have estimated that around 431 MW of electricity-generation capacity has been taken out of the system as a result of the flood damage.
Roads and Bridges Swept Away
The destruction of transportation infrastructure has significantly complicated rescue operations.
Preliminary reports indicate that approximately 19 bridges and 40 kilometres of roads have been damaged, leaving several areas without normal road access.
Other assessments have reported that more than 20 suspension and motorable bridges between Rasuwa and Malkhu were swept away, including bridges connecting important transport routes toward Dhadingbesi and other communities.
The Muglin-Narayanghat road section has also reportedly been affected, adding to transportation difficulties in the wider region.
The destruction of bridges and roads has left rescue teams heavily dependent on helicopters and other specialised equipment to reach isolated communities.
Communications Infrastructure Also Damaged
The flood has caused extensive damage to telecommunications infrastructure.
According to preliminary reports, more than 25 telecommunications sites have been affected in areas including Timure, Syaphrubesi and Nuwakot.
Infrastructure belonging to Nepal Telecom and Ncell, including towers, sites and optical-fibre networks, has reportedly been damaged. The Nepal Telecom fibre connection linking Nepal with China has also been affected.
Flood-warning infrastructure has suffered damage as well, with six flood early-warning systems in Rasuwa, Dhading and Nuwakot reportedly affected.
The loss of communications has made it considerably more difficult for families, authorities and rescue teams to establish contact with people in the affected areas.
Banks, Government Buildings and Other Infrastructure Damaged
The flood has also swept away or damaged offices belonging to more than half a dozen banks and financial institutions, according to preliminary reports.
At the central prison in Vidhur Municipality-6, Khampa Camp, Nuwakot, the administrative building and Nepal Police security-unit building sustained damage. The prison’s outer wall and vehicles were also damaged.
Despite the destruction, authorities reported that all 800 prisoners remained safe.
Sixty-Three Injured Receiving Treatment
Nepal Police reported that 63 injured people had been rescued and were receiving treatment at hospitals and medical facilities.
Those receiving treatment were reported at several institutions, including:
- Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital,
- Maharajgunj — 21,
- National Trauma Center — 7,
- Birendra Army Hospital — 1,
- Rasuwa Hospital — 21,
- Trishuli Hospital — 16,
- Norvic Hospital — 3,
- Green City Hospital — 1
Aerial rescue operations by the Nepal Army and other security personnel are continuing, while injured survivors are being transported to medical facilities.
Treatment and emergency care are also being provided at institutions including the Shree No. 1 Military Training Center in Trishuli and Chakra Dev Hospital.
The human tragedy is particularly visible along the banks of the Trishuli River, where relatives of people who have died, disappeared or been injured have gathered outside hospitals, anxiously waiting for information about their loved ones.
Experts Examine Possible Cause of the Flood
The sudden arrival of such an enormous volume of water has prompted intense discussion among geologists, hydrologists and meteorologists about what triggered the disaster.
Geologist Shreekamal Dwivedi said recent heavy rainfall in the northern areas of Melamchi and Langtang could have saturated the ground and triggered a sudden collapse or debris flow.
Another possibility, he said, was that an avalanche or landslide had created a natural dam in the river and that the blockage subsequently collapsed, releasing a massive volume of water downstream.
Dwivedi cautioned that it was too early to establish one definitive cause. He said melting snow or ice, a glacier-related event or the sudden collapse of a river blockage could all potentially produce a flood of this magnitude.
He stressed that a detailed geological investigation would be necessary before authorities could establish precisely what happened.
Meteorologist Min Kumar Aryal similarly said that rainfall alone might not explain the extraordinary volume of water.
He said another possibility was the sudden failure of a glacial lake or a natural dam formed by a blocked river. According to him, scientists would need further data before reaching a firm conclusion.
What Is a Glacial Flood?
According to geologist Dwivedi, a sudden high-volume flood carrying large amounts of debris in a mountainous environment can broadly be associated with a glacial flood.
Such events were once primarily discussed in connection with glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), but scientists have increasingly recognised that similar destructive flows can be triggered by several different processes.
One major mechanism is the sudden failure of a glacial lake. Water from melting glaciers can accumulate behind a natural dam. If an avalanche falls into the lake, if erosion weakens the natural dam, or if the dam collapses because of geological instability or increasing water pressure, enormous volumes of water can suddenly escape.
The resulting flow can carry rocks, soil, trees and other debris at tremendous speed.
Because water flowing rapidly through steep Himalayan valleys has enormous carrying capacity, the resulting flood can be far more destructive than a conventional river flood.
Melting Snow and Ice Can Intensify Flooding
Glaciers form when layers of snow accumulate in high Himalayan areas where temperatures remain below freezing. As successive layers accumulate, the weight compresses the snow until it gradually becomes dense ice.
Over time, the accumulated ice can begin moving downhill under gravity, forming a glacier.
When temperatures rise or unusually warm rainfall occurs in high-altitude areas, melting can accelerate. Water released from snow and ice can then contribute to sudden increases in river flow.
In some circumstances, the combination of melting snow, ice, rainfall and unstable terrain can produce extremely destructive debris-filled floods.
Heavy Rainfall in the High Himalayas
Another possible trigger is unusually heavy rainfall in areas that normally receive relatively little precipitation.
Dwivedi noted that some high Himalayan regions receive only modest annual rainfall. Manang, for example, receives an average of approximately 250 millimetres of rainfall annually.
When an unusually large amount of rain falls within a short period, however, relatively warm rainwater can rapidly melt snow, ice and frozen ground.
Such compound events have previously contributed to major disasters in the Himalayan region, including devastating floods in Kedarnath in India and the Mahakali and Melamchi regions of Nepal in 2013.
In the Kedarnath region, satellite rainfall data showed more than 500 millimetres of rain over one week. The Melamchi basin also experienced exceptionally heavy rainfall during the 2013 disaster.
In Manang, a 24-hour rainfall total of 82.8 millimetres was enough to contribute to a complex mixed-flow event in an area where annual average rainfall is only around 250 millimetres.
Avalanches Can Also Trigger Catastrophic Floods
Large avalanches in steep Himalayan terrain can create another dangerous chain reaction.
An avalanche can block a river, creating a temporary natural dam. Water may then accumulate behind the blockage before suddenly breaking through it.
The avalanche material can also mix with water and become a rapidly moving debris flow capable of carrying enormous rocks, soil and other material downstream.
Dwivedi pointed to previous disasters, including the Madi disaster of 2003 and the Seti disaster of 2012, as examples of events in which avalanche-related processes played a major role.
Warning: The Danger May Not Yet Be Over
Perhaps the most urgent concern is that authorities have warned that the natural blockage in the Lhende Khola system may not have completely cleared.
The Flood Forecasting Division said information received from China indicated that water had accumulated behind the blockage and that the resulting lake had not yet fully drained.
If another portion of the blockage collapses suddenly, additional water could surge downstream into the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli systems.
Authorities have therefore urged residents in vulnerable downstream areas to remain away from riverbanks and continue following official warnings.
Government Intensifies Search, Rescue and Relief Operations
The Nepal government has mobilised its agencies for search, rescue, relief, medical care and security operations.
A meeting of the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, chaired by the Prime Minister, was held to assess the emergency and coordinate the national response.
According to information presented to Parliament by the Foreign Minister, government agencies have been instructed to give the search for missing people and rescue of survivors the highest priority.
Six districts have also reportedly been declared disaster crisis-affected areas, allowing authorities to accelerate emergency operations and resource mobilisation. Special provisions have reportedly been introduced to facilitate rescue operations, including the use of drones without the normal prior permissions where necessary.
A Tragedy Still Unfolding
The Bhote Koshi disaster has devastated communities across a wide section of northern and central Nepal.
From Rasuwa through Nuwakot and Dhading toward Chitwan, the flood has destroyed or damaged homes, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities, communications infrastructure, businesses and government buildings.
Dramatic aerial images from Trishuli Bazaar show the enormous force of the floodwaters and the scale of destruction along the river.
Yet the full human cost remains unknown.
Authorities are still searching for dozens of security personnel, hundreds of tourists and travellers, hydropower workers and other residents who remain out of contact.
Families gathered outside hospitals along the Trishuli River continue to wait for information about missing relatives, while rescue workers face dangerous conditions in areas where roads and bridges have disappeared.
As the search and rescue operation continues, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant, stay away from riverbanks and rely on verified official information.
The situation remains dynamic, and casualty, missing-person and infrastructure-damage figures are expected to change as rescue teams gain access to isolated areas and authorities complete verification.
