Landslide Near Bhupaley Bridge Cuts Off Indo-Bhutan Border Hamlet of Bindu, Leaving Scores of Tourists and Commuters Stranded
The blockage has effectively paralyzed traffic along the critical 9.2 km corridor connecting Jholung to Bindu via Paren. Because this single artery represents the sole access route into the hamlet, the disruption has marooned visiting tourists unable to return from their trips, while completely paralyzing daily life for school-going children, office-goers, and villagers from adjacent settlements who rely exclusively on this stretch for essential transit.
Witnesses reported that a motorcyclist had a miraculous escape when the hillside collapsed moments after he passed beneath it, triggering widespread panic among travellers in the vicinity. Local residents voiced profound alarm over the recurring hazards, noting that the slope near Bhupaley Bridge has shown chronic instability since last year, when initial road and protection-wall construction began. Extensive hill-cutting has left the upper cliffs vulnerable, resulting in frequent rockfalls triggered even by mild showers or mechanical vibrations.
Beyond its scenic appeal, the border hamlet of Bindu holds strategic and regional significance as the site of the Bindu Barrage on the Indo-Bhutan frontier. The barrage channels water from Bhutan’s Bindu River to feed the Jaldhaka Hydel Project while regulating the confluence of the Jaldhaka River and mountain streams originating from Todey.
Community members emphasized that the persistent threat of rockfalls, paired with a noticeable lack of comprehensive safety protocols and physical containment barriers at active excavation sites, places pedestrians and two-wheeler riders under constant danger—particularly while heavy machinery operates overhead. The recurring road closures and travel uncertainties have also dealt a severe blow to local homestays, transport operators, and tourism-dependent livelihoods, prompting urgent calls from residents for reinforced slope stabilization and foolproof safety measures.
