Revolutionizing Innovation: West Bengal Sets Up Three New Biotech Hubs and Satellite Park in Major Push for Scientific Growth

KalimNews, Aug 9, 2026, Kalimpong: In a major initiative to bolster its socio-economic landscape and elevate scientific development, the West Bengal Government is embarking on an ambitious project to establish three state-of-the-art biotechnology hubs across Bardhaman, Kalimpong, and Medinipur districts. Complementing this expansion is a proposed satellite Biotech Park in Kalimpong, specifically designed to extend advanced technological infrastructure beyond major urban centers while fostering deeper industry-academia collaborations.

By bridging the gap between state departments—including Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food Processing—and the Biotechnology sector, these integrated facilities aim to enhance agricultural productivity, improve overall crop quality, and ensure the distribution of germ-free food products to the public. This initiative leverages the state's diverse biological wealth in vegetables, fruits, flowers, and other vital plant resources.

To chart an actionable roadmap for this expanded ecosystem, the Department of Science and Technology and Biotechnology (DSTBT) recently convened a high-level consultative meeting chaired by Minister-in-Charge Kalyan Chakraborti, Minister of State Moumita Biswas Misra, and Additional Chief Secretary Nandini Chakravorty. Bringing together vice-chancellors and representatives from nearly 50 universities, the session followed a preliminary dialogue held on July 28 with national R&D institution heads. The combined strategic recommendations gathered from both sessions will directly form the bedrock for the upcoming West Bengal State Science & Technology Congress 2026, set to take place on September 16 and 17.

Emphasizing the academic focus of the event, Minister Kalyan Chakraborti announced that academic institutions have been instructed to distribute abstract submission guidelines to STEM scholars, researchers, and faculty members. Outstanding submissions will be presented during technical sessions at the flagship Congress and compiled into an official monograph and abstract volume.

The administration's comprehensive roadmap underscores the state's impressive research prowess, highlighting that the Kolkata metropolitan region accounts for roughly 12.5% of India’s high-quality research output according to the Nature Index—outpacing key national centers like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi NCR. Furthermore, over 250 West Bengal-based scientists are featured in the elite Stanford University–Elsevier Top 2% Scientists list.

To maintain this momentum, the state has actively sponsored more than 500 R&D projects across various universities, with over 400 actively ongoing. Parallel achievements by the state's Patent Information Centre showcase a robust intellectual property foundation, having facilitated over 450 patent applications, secured more than 150 official grants, and registered 59 Geographical Indications (GIs). This remarkable milestone positions West Bengal third nationwide in GI registrations as the government continues converting academic discoveries into commercial enterprises, cutting-edge technologies, and practical societal solutions.
