Hilli Battle of 1971 remembered at war memorial


MP, August 20, 2026, Balurghat : The historic Battle of Hilli was revisited at the Hilli War Memorial in Dakshin Dinajpur on Wednesday, with senior civil and military officials, veterans, families of martyrs, NCC cadets, students and local residents paying tribute to the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice during one of the significant battles of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.

The Battle of Hilli was fought in the Hilli sector of present-day West Bengal during the India-Pakistan war of 1971. The strategically important Hilli railway junction and surrounding areas witnessed intense fighting as Indian forces advanced towards what was then East Pakistan. Pakistani troops mounted strong resistance, resulting in fierce engagements and heavy casualties.

The battle is remembered for the determination and bravery displayed by soldiers on both sides and for the crucial role played by Indian troops in the eastern theatre.

The commemoration began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Hilli War Memorial. District Magistrate Balasubramanian T, Superintendent of Police Abhishek Gupta, representatives of the Zila Sainik Board, Veer Naris and veterans paid homage to the fallen soldiers.

The Second-in-Command of the 5th Battalion, Rajputana Rifles (5 RAJ RIF), laid a wreath on behalf of the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command.

Addressing the gathering, Balasubramanian T highlighted the historical importance of the Hilli sector and praised the courage, tactical skill and selflessness of the Indian Armed Forces. He also assured continued administrative support for veterans and families of martyrs.

A weapon display organised by 5 RAJ RIF showcased military equipment and offered visitors an insight into the preparedness of the armed forces.

Cadets of the 7th Battalion NCC presented a march past, while school students performed patriotic cultural programmes.

Veer Naris and gallantry award winners were felicitated during the programme.

The event concluded with an interaction among officials, veterans, military personnel and citizens, reaffirming the enduring legacy of courage and sacrifice associated with Hilli.
