BJP Leaders Appointed to Governing Bodies of 247 Colleges in West Bengal


MP, August 23, 2026: The state government has appointed its MPs, MLAs and other prominent party leaders as presidents of governing bodies in 247 colleges, after dissolving the bodies of all government-aided colleges in May.

Several leaders have been assigned colleges in Opposition strongholds.

Among the MPs and Union ministers named are Sukanta Majumdar, Union Minister of state for Education, who has been assigned Balurghat College and Gangarampur College; Shantanu Thakur, who gets Gobardanga Hindu College and Sree Chaitanya College in Habra; Saumitra Khan, Onda Thana Mahavidyalaya and Ramananda College; Soumendu Adhikari, Prabhat Kumar College in Contai; and Abhijit Gangopadhyay, Mahishadal Raj College.

Raju Bista has been given responsibility for Bijanbari College, Southfield College and Siliguri College of Commerce, while Khagen Murmu gets Chanchal College and Harishchandrapur College.

Jagannath Sarkar has been assigned Chakdaha College and Kalyani Mahavidyalaya, and Manoj Tigga has been assigned Shamuktala Sidhu-Kanu College and Vivekananda College in Alipurduar.

Among the prominent leaders in Kolkata and adjoining areas, Rathindra Bose, Speaker of the Assembly, has been assigned Cooch Behar College and Thakur Panchanan Mahila Mahavidyalaya.

Minister Swapan Dasgupta gets Asutosh College, Jogmaya Devi College and Shyama Prasad College.

Sajal Ghosh has been assigned the three institutions under the Bangabasi College group — Bangabasi College, Bangabasi Evening College and Bangabasi Morning College.

Minister Tapas Roy has been assigned Vidyasagar College (Day), Vidyasagar College for Women and Vidyasagar Metropolitan College.

MLAs Koustav Bagchi, Tarunjyoti Tewari and Ritesh Tewari have also been given charge of multiple colleges.

In the districts, minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay has been assigned Bolpur College, Shambhunath College and Suri Vidyasagar College.

Dipak Barman gets Falakata College and Lilabati Mahavidyalaya, while minister Agnimitra Paul has been assigned Asansol’s Banwarilal Bhalotia (BLB) College.

Tourism minister Shankar Ghosh has been given Siliguri College and Surya Sen Mahavidyalaya.

Other appointments include MLA Rudranil Ghosh to Dr Kanailal Bhattacharya College and Narsingha Dutt College, Hiranmoy Chattopadhyay to Shyampur Siddheshwari Mahavidyalaya, and minister Indranil Khan to Kishore Bharati Bhagini Nivedita College, Robin Mukherjee College and Sarsuna College.

MLA Rupa Ganguly has been assigned Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya, Jitendra Tiwari Pandaveswar College and Ashok Dinda, Seth Anandram Jaipuria College.
