WBSSC Announces Major Breakthrough in Upper Primary Teacher Recruitment: Counselling for 1,177 Candidates to Begin on July 21

KalimNews, July 7, 2026, Kalimpong: Thousands of aspiring teachers in West Bengal have finally received encouraging news as the West Bengal Central School Service Commission (WBSSC) has announced a significant step forward in the long-delayed Upper Primary Teacher Recruitment process. After years of uncertainty and legal complications, the Commission has confirmed that counselling for 1,177 candidates from the 2016 Upper Primary recruitment panel will commence on July 21, 2026.

The announcement was made through an official notification issued by WBSSC on Tuesday, July 7, following directions from the Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court. The decision marks another milestone in resolving one of the state's longest-running teacher recruitment processes.

The Upper Primary Teacher Recruitment examination was originally conducted in 2015, while the recruitment panel was published in 2016. However, prolonged legal disputes prevented many successful candidates from receiving appointment recommendations despite qualifying years ago.

Following court directives, the School Service Commission had already initiated counselling and recommendation procedures for 14,052 Upper Primary teaching vacancies. Out of these, 12,723 candidates listed in the merit panel have successfully completed the counselling process and received recommendations. The remaining 1,241 candidates continued to await their opportunity due to pending legal proceedings.

In compliance with the latest order of the Calcutta High Court's Division Bench, the Commission has now confirmed that counselling will proceed for 1,177 of the remaining candidates beginning on July 21, 2026. However, the counselling process for 64 candidates has been kept on hold for the time being. According to the Commission, a separate notification regarding these candidates is expected to be issued at a later stage.

The counselling sessions will be conducted at the office of the West Bengal Central School Service Commission (WBSSC). The Commission has stated that the detailed schedule, reporting time, and other instructions will soon be published on its official website. Candidates are advised to regularly check official notifications to stay informed about further updates.

Candidates attending the counselling sessions on or after July 21 must carry both their original documents and self-attested photocopies. These include:

  • WBSSC Counselling Call Letter downloaded from the official website.
  • Upper Primary TET Admit Card and Marksheet.
  • B.Ed. or D.El.Ed. certificates and marksheets.
  • Graduation degree certificate and marksheets.
  • Class 10 and Class 12 certificates and marksheets.
  • Valid identity proof and any additional documents specified in the official notification.

Failure to produce the required documents may affect the counselling process.

The latest development is expected to bring relief to hundreds of candidates who have been waiting nearly a decade for the recruitment process to move forward. The Commission's decision reflects the state's continued efforts to complete all pending appointments arising from the historic 2016 recruitment panel.

Alongside the completion of the pending recruitment process, the state government is also preparing for a fresh cycle of Upper Primary Teacher recruitment. Administrative sources indicate that a new recruitment drive is expected once the court-monitored appointments from the previous panel are fully completed.

With counselling finally resuming after years of legal delays, aspiring teachers are now looking forward with renewed hope as West Bengal moves closer to completing the long-pending Upper Primary recruitment process while preparing for a fresh phase of large-scale teacher appointments.
