MP, July 4, 2026, Siliguri: Police have arrested three alleged land mafias operating in the Matigara area of Siliguri in connection with land-related fraud and illegal property transactions.

The arrested accused have been identified as Rinku Singh, Rajesh Oraon and Pankaj Tamang. All are residents of Siliguri and Matigara.

According to police sources, Rinku Singh was arrested in connection with a land fraud case registered on June 25.

In a separate case lodged on Thursday, Matigara Police arrested Rajesh Oraon and Pankaj Tamang for their alleged involvement in similar offences.

The arrests come amid an intensified drive against alleged land mafias in the state.

Recently, MP Raju Bista had submitted a list of 22 alleged land mafias to the police, urging strict action.

Sources said the names of the three arrested were also included in that list.

Police sources alleged that the accused were part of a larger network that had been illegally transferring government and privately owned vacant land using forged documents.

It is also suspected that some employees of the Additional District Sub-Registrar office may have assisted the racket in facilitating the fraudulent land transactions.

The three accused were produced before the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court on Friday.

However, they claimed before the media that they were innocent and had been falsely implicated.

Further investigation is on.
