PWD to Upgrade Two Key Roads in Darjeeling Hills After GTA Handover

PTI, July 29, 2026, Kolkata: In a latest development aimed at improving connectivity in the Darjeeling hills, the West Bengal Public Works Department (PWD) is set to upgrade two crucial road stretches in the region.

The PWD has taken over the maintenance of the two roads, which were under the control of the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA).

These two roads are Rohini Road, also known as Subash Ghising Marg, and the Darjeeling–Lebong–Rangeyroong–3rd Mile Circular Road.

Rohini Road connects NH-110 and State Highway 12 near Simulbari, serving as a primary transit link to the hills.

This decision came after years of persistent advocacy for improved infrastructure in the hill areas.

BJP Member of Parliament from Darjeeling, Raju Bista, recently said that the decision marks the state's acceptance of a long-standing demand.

Bista visited the site and supervised the construction personnel, and a review plan for the upcoming road development work was also chalked out.

According to PWD sources, the upgrades are expected to significantly enhance road safety, reduce travel time, and bolster tourism and overall economic activity by improving connectivity in the Darjeeling hills.

The PWD will prepare draft Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) focusing on structural strengthening, widening, and the construction of necessary culverts and bridges.
