Primary School Teachers to Get Home District Transfer Option: Minister

MP, July 20, 2026, Alipurduar : : Primary school teachers serving outside their home districts will soon be able to apply for transfers to schools of their choice within their respective home districts, State School Education and MSME Minister Deepak Barman announced.

The School Education Department will invite eligible teachers to submit their preferred transfer options.

The announcement was made while the minister was addressing a teachers' gathering organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Shaikshik Mahasangh at Falakata High School.

The minister also announced that surplus teachers posted in schools across various districts would be allowed to seek transfers to schools of their choice within the same circle by submitting their preferences to the School Education Department.

Senior teachers will be given priority in the transfer process.

If a surplus teacher does not exercise the option, the department will prepare a list of the youngest teachers in the concerned schools and transfer them accordingly.

Explaining the move, Barman said: "According to government norms, there should be one teacher for every 22 students in government schools. However, for the time being, we have decided to ensure at least one teacher for every 30 students in each school. Unless this student-teacher ratio is maintained, it will not be possible to restore an ideal learning environment in the state's primary schools. Therefore, our government has decided to prioritise correcting the student-teacher ratio."

The minister further said the department is considering bringing para-teachers who were compelled to relocate after marriage under the transfer policy, enabling them to apply for transfers as well.
