Police recover gold and over Rs 2 crore in cash, seven arrested in New Town operation

MP, July 14, 2026, Kolkata : In a major breakthrough against organised crime, a joint team from Techno City Police Station and Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station recovered more than Rs 2 crore in cash and a substantial quantity of gold during a raid at a guest house in New Town late on Monday night.

The search operation, which concluded on Tuesday morning, resulted in the arrest of seven individuals, including one woman.

Police also seized two vehicles resembling ATM cash vans and a scooter, which were allegedly used to transport the money.

Acting on a tip-off, police officers cordoned off the building.

Inside the guest house, the seven accused were allegedly found counting large amounts of cash.

Following the recovery, police arranged for bank officials equipped with high-speed cash-counting machines.

After the counting process, it was found that the accused were handling around Rs 2.20 crore in cash.

Sources said the suspects had rented the flat around seven months ago.

To avoid raising suspicion, they reportedly told neighbours that the premises were being used as a corporate call centre.

However, investigators suspect that the location was being used as a front for a large hawala racket and cyber fraud network.

The arrested individuals include residents of Jharkhand, indicating possible interstate links.

According to investigators, the accused used two vehicles resembling ATM cash vans to avoid attracting the attention of local residents while transporting the cash.

The seven accused are being interrogated to identify others involved in the racket and to trace the source as well as the intended destination of the cash.
